Walking around Tenerife and scrolling through Instagram profiles, I see the same mistakes again and again. The good news: almost all of them are quick to fix.
1. A logo you can't read when it's small
Your logo mostly lives in your profile photo, a favicon or a label. If it has lots of detail or thin letters, at that size it turns into a blur.
What to do: have a simplified version, just the symbol or your initials, for small sizes.
2. Too many colours
Five, six, seven colours. Each one chosen for a different reason and none of them leading.
What to do: stick to two or three main colours and one accent. And always use them.
3. A new font in every post
A handwritten one today, a very modern one tomorrow, the Canva default the day after. That way nobody recognises your posts in the feed.
What to do: pick two fonts, one for headlines and one for text, and stay with them.
4. Copying the competition
If every business in your field uses green and a leaf, using green and a leaf won't help you stand out. It will help you blend in.
What to do: look at what your competitors do to know what to avoid, not what to copy.
A brand doesn't have to please everyone. It has to please your client.
5. A different name everywhere
Your sign says one thing, Google another and Instagram another with an underscore. Clients start wondering if you're the same business.
What to do: use the same name, profile photo and details everywhere.
6. Talking about yourself instead of your client
"Market leaders", "quality and professionalism", "over 10 years of experience". Everyone says the same.
What to do: say what problem you solve and how your client feels afterwards.
7. Leaving it for when there's time
The brand always gets pushed back. Meanwhile, every month people form an idea of your business from what they see.
What to do: start small. Sort out your colours this week and your Google profile next week.
